SUMMARY:NC Breastfeeding Coalition Statewide Meeting: Countdown to National Breastfeeding Month
DESCRIPTION:Breastfeeding Family Friendly Communities provides technical assistance to the North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition as we pilot the Ten Steps to a Breastfeeding Family Friendly Community. \n  \nWorking in local municipalities taught us something important. There are things a local community simply cannot do on its own. Some change has to happen at the state level. \n  \nThis meeting is where local advocates come together to do that work statewide. We all have a role\, and every level of government has one to play. \n  \nMembers and non-members alike are welcome. No credentials required.

SUMMARY:World Breastfeeding Week
DESCRIPTION:World Breastfeeding Week is hosted by WABA\, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action. \n  \nIt was a call to action from WABA that started the Ten Steps to a Breastfeeding Family Friendly Community. Our whole framework began as an answer to this week. \n  \nIt is easy to let a week like this pass\, to think an awareness week is a small thing. But these calls to action\, and the accountability that comes with them\, change the world slowly. Take this week to celebrate. \n  \nWABA publishes a full week of materials and a call to action each year. Follow their lead.

SUMMARY:National Breastfeeding Month
DESCRIPTION:For our readers\, National Breastfeeding Month lasts all year. Every day is National Breastfeeding Month when this is your work. \n  \nAugust is when the rest of the country joins us. \n  \nIt is a transformative month for this organization. We come out of every August with new framing and new ideas that carry us through the next eleven months. It is also exhausting. Most of us have something on the calendar every single day\, and we push hard. \n  \nSo let this month fuel you. See the joy in it. Choose progress over perfection.

SUMMARY:North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition Mixer
DESCRIPTION:Friends of the North Carolina Breastfeeding Coalition gather during National Breastfeeding Month. \n  \nMost of this work happens on a screen. A Zoom square\, a shared document\, an email thread that never quite ends. This is the part where you find out who the other people actually are. \n  \nThe relationships that carry a coalition through a hard legislative session get built in rooms like this one\, not in meetings. Breastfeeding Family Friendly Communities is proud to sponsor this year’s mixer. Come find us.

SUMMARY:Baby Cafe Chat: Building Breastfeeding Family Friendly Communities
DESCRIPTION:Love Anderson\, co-founder of Breastfeeding Family Friendly Communities\, joins Baby Cafe USA for their August Cafe Chat. \n  \nBaby Cafes do something most systems cannot. They put skilled lactation support in a room where families already are\, free and drop-in\, with no appointment and no referral. The people who run them see what breaks first\, and they see it everywhere at once. \n  \nThis is an internal meeting of the Baby Cafe USA network and is not a public event. Baby Cafes themselves are free and open to anyone. You can find one near you at babycafeusa.org.

SUMMARY:NACCHO Webinar: Five Years of the Continuity of Care in Breastfeeding Support Blueprint
DESCRIPTION:Five years ago NACCHO published the Continuity of Care in Breastfeeding Support Blueprint. More than 45 counties and communities have since put it to work. \n  \nBreastfeeding Family Friendly Communities presents alongside NACCHO\, the Black Mothers’ Breastfeeding Association in Michigan\, and the Augusta University Research Institute in Georgia. Three very different places\, applying the same framework\, learning different things. \n  \nWhat we will actually talk about is the unglamorous part: how you get a health department\, a community organization\, and a hospital to hand a family off to one another without dropping them. \n  \nOpen registration.

SUMMARY:Building Breastfeeding Family Friendly Communities: A Child Survival Strategy
DESCRIPTION:Love Anderson\, co-founder of Breastfeeding Family Friendly Communities\, presents for the West Virginia Perinatal Partnership and the West Virginia Breastfeeding Institute. \n  \nBreastfeeding is one of the most powerful and cost-effective child survival interventions we have. It is also one of the easiest for a community to leave entirely to individual mothers\, as though it were a private decision made in a private room. \n  \nThis session is about what changes when a whole community decides otherwise: when employers\, childcare\, healthcare\, and local government each take up the part of this that belongs to them. \n  \nCE/CME and IBLCE L-CERPs approved. Open registration.

DESCRIPTION:Semana de la Lactancia Latina is organized by the Union de Lideres de Lactancia Latino. \nThey plan the week\, they build the resources\, and they publish a week of things to do. SUMMARY:Deaf and Hard of Hearing Breastfeeding Week
DESCRIPTION:Deaf and Hard of Hearing Breastfeeding Week is organized by the DC Breastfeeding Coalition. \nUniversal access is not an add-on to this work. A family who cannot get information in the language they actually use is a family we have not served\, and this week names that plainly. Follow their page and use what they publish. \nCelebrate it locally. Ask one hard question where you are: if a Deaf parent walked into your support group next week\, what would happen?

SUMMARY:Every Day is Someone's Emergency: Infant and Young Child Feeding Safety in Disasters and Daily Practice
DESCRIPTION:Melinda and Corey are presenting at the NCPHA Fall Educational Conference on behalf of the SAFE Infant Feeding Team. It is a joint workshop of the Emergency Preparedness and Response section and the Women’s and Children’s Health section\, which is the whole point. Those two rooms do not meet often enough. \nSAFE is the national IYCF-E implementation of Breastfeeding Family Friendly Communities. If BFFC is the blue skies strategy\, the slow work of building communities where feeding a baby is everyone’s business\, SAFE is the gray skies strategy\, for the days that work gets tested. \nThe conference theme this year is From the Mountain to the Coast: Public Health for all North Carolinians. This state’s public health workforce is the room this has to land in. Emergency infant feeding is not a specialty topic in North Carolina anymore. After Helene it is a job description. And the title says the rest of it: the house fire on a Tuesday counts too. \nThe Fall Educational Conference runs September 30 through October 2 at the Embassy Suites Convention Center in Concord. Registration and the full agenda are on the NCPHA website.

SUMMARY:When the System Stops: Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies in Appalachia
DESCRIPTION:The SAFE Infant Feeding Team is on the Day Two panel at the 6th Appalachian Breastfeeding Conference. \nAppalachia has already lived this. When the roads wash out and the power stays off for a week\, the formula supply chain and the lactation support system fail at the same time\, and the families furthest up the holler feel it first. Every emergency plan we have seen assumes someone else is handling the babies. This session is about what a community can put in place before the water rises. \nRegistration and the full program are on the Appalachian Breastfeeding Network website.

SUMMARY:USBC Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies Constellation
DESCRIPTION:The US Breastfeeding Committee owns this constellation. The SAFE Infant Feeding Team facilitates it. \nConstellations are how USBC does collective work. Member organizations commit to a shared piece of the national agenda and meet over time to actually move it. Facilitating the infant and young child feeding in emergencies constellation means this conversation now has a permanent home inside the national coalition instead of living in a handful of people’s inboxes. \nParticipation is open to US Breastfeeding Committee member organizations. If your organization is a USBC member and you want a seat at this table\, contact USBC for an invitation. If you are not a member yet\, that is the first step\, and it is worth taking.

SUMMARY:The Invisible Infrastructure: Securing First Food in the Wake of Hurricane Helene
DESCRIPTION:The SAFE Infant Feeding Team is presenting at the IAEM 74th Annual Conference and EMEX\, which is the room where the country’s emergency managers actually are. \nHelene showed what happens when the infrastructure that feeds infants is invisible in a plan. It is not a shelter supply line and it is not a medical annex. It is a system of people\, and when it breaks there is no form for it. This session makes the case to emergency managers that first food belongs in the plan before the storm\, not in the after action report. \nRegistration and the full program are on the IAEM conference site.

SUMMARY:SAFE Infant Feeding Team Retreat
DESCRIPTION:The SAFE Infant Feeding Team is together in person this week. The team arrives ahead of the Nurse-Family Partnership presentation on the 19th and heads home Sunday. \nThis is an internal working retreat\, not a public event. We are listing it so you know the team will be slow to answer that week. A group that spends the year inside other people’s emergencies has to take a few days to plan its own work on purpose.

SUMMARY:The Calm in the Chaos: Protecting Infant Nutrition from House Fires to Hurricanes
DESCRIPTION:Norma Escobar is presenting for the North Carolina Nurse-Family Partnership Community of Practice on behalf of the SAFE Infant Feeding Team. \nNurse home visitors are often the only person who lays eyes on a family in the days after a house fire or a flood. That is the point of this session. Most of the emergencies that separate a baby from their feeding plan are small and local and never make the news\, and the people who catch them are already in the home. \nThis is a session for the North Carolina Nurse-Family Partnership community of practice. Session time to be announced.

SUMMARY:USBC Infant and Young Child Feeding in Emergencies Constellation
DESCRIPTION:The US Breastfeeding Committee owns this constellation. The SAFE Infant Feeding Team facilitates it. SAFE is the national IYCF-E implementation of Breastfeeding Family Friendly Communities. If BFFC is the blue skies strategy\, the slow work of building communities where feeding a baby is everyone’s business\, SAFE is the gray skies strategy\, for the days that work gets tested. Constellations are how USBC does collective work. Member organizations commit to a shared piece of the national agenda and meet over time to actually move it. Facilitating the infant and young child feeding in emergencies constellation means this conversation now has a permanent home inside the national coalition instead of living in a handful of people’s inboxes. Participation is open to US Breastfeeding Committee member organizations. If your organization is a USBC member and you want a seat at this table\, contact USBC for an invitation. If you are not a member yet\, that is the first step\, and it is worth taking.
