Franklin County: Progress on the Path to a Breastfeeding Family Friendly Community

As Franklin County starts its second year in the Breastfeeding Family Friendly Communities (BFFC) initiative, the momentum of its accomplishments is inspiring. This small but dedicated community has embraced the Ten Steps to a Breastfeeding Family Friendly Community, tailoring them to reflect its unique culture and needs. Here are some highlights from their journey so far:

Expanding Breastfeeding-Friendly Businesses

Franklin County has made remarkable progress in engaging local businesses, with 16 establishments officially recognized as breastfeeding-friendly in the past year. Each of these businesses proudly displays the “Breastfeeding Welcome Here” cling, signaling their support for breastfeeding families. The effort to integrate the BFFC logo into physical spaces and digital platforms, like websites and social media, has amplified visibility and normalized the breastfeeding-friendly culture within the community.

Creative Community Outreach

One of Franklin County’s standout successes is its approach to public outreach. Through events and partnerships with local organizations, the community has distributed informative, culturally appropriate materials that celebrate the benefits of breastfeeding. To foster a breastfeeding-friendly environment, Franklin County has leaned into creating welcoming public spaces. Inspired by successful models in other communities, Franklin County has been brainstorming ways to integrate local artwork and culturally relevant symbols into its parks and community spaces. These efforts aim to reflect the diverse families that make up the county while reinforcing the normalcy of breastfeeding in public spaces.

Building Relationships with Health Leaders

Though Franklin County doesn’t have its own hospital, the community has successfully identified key healthcare providers and health systems to champion breastfeeding initiatives. They’ve worked to align local practices with the World Health Organization’s recommendations on optimal infant nutrition, ensuring consistent support for families through health leadership.

Recognizing the Power of Partnerships

Franklin County has cultivated a spirit of collaboration. From working with WIC offices and peer-support groups to engaging faith-based organizations and community centers, the county has built a network of stakeholders dedicated to supporting breastfeeding families. These partnerships have expanded the reach of Franklin County’s breastfeeding-friendly initiatives, touching more families and making a tangible impact.

Looking Ahead

Franklin County serves as a model for other small communities, proving that impactful changes can be achieved through collaboration, creativity, and commitment.
